Chocolate and candy canes, trees and garlands, Christmas represent the joy of giving and peace and love. Unfortunately for some, Christmas also represents emergency veterinarian visits for obstructed bowels after the tinsel on the tree mysteriously disappears, chocolate poisoning from careless children leaving their treats out, and turkey bones from the garbage that must be removed from an intestine.

We want your entire family to have the safest, happiest Christmas season possible. We present to you, a collection of Christmas safety tips. May your season be full of cheer!

Don’t give Puppies or Kittens as a Christmas surprise gift.
If you're getting a pet for Christmas, and it's an agreed upon addition to the family, wait until the home is more quiet to bring the little one in - the normal bustle of Christmas will be too overwhelming for your new friend! If you need something under the tree, buy the leash, collar, and a training book; make a gift certificate for the pet of choice, etc. But to echo - DON'T SURPRISE SOMEONE WITH A PET FOR CHRISTMAS!

Poinsettias are deadly for cats. Tinsel/streamers are deadly for animals that will eat it (dogs and cats - it'll get tangled in their intestines). Chocolate is deadly. And too much rich holiday food as "treats" will likely make for many days of deadly gas and nasty diarrhoea... Also avoid those pressed rawhide bones that look like candy canes and stuff - it generally leads to ... "loose stool" - not very Christmassy!

Remember to water the tree regularly, so that the dogs don't!

Don't forget to spend quality time with your pet. Sometimes we get so caught up in the activities and family feuds, we don't take time for long walks and play sessions with our buddies.

Keep electrical cords away from curious puppies and kitties. One chomp is all it'll take!

Decorate the lower branches with things that don't mind being broken, swallowed or pawed.

Be cautious of piling Christmas prezzies under the tree and allowing unlimited access.

If you have a chewer, coat new wires (like the ones for the Christmas tree lights) in bitter apple, or another chew deterrent.

If you're having guests over, try to leave a room available as a "quiet room" for the pets to escape to, especially if there are a lot of boisterous children.

Anchor your Christmas tree to the ceiling or wall behind it.

My emergency visit to the Vet.

I have not been well of late.  Dad rushed me to the vet as he thought I had a foreign body stuck in my troth.  I was drooling a lot and when I got to the vet I had two injections and was put on two types of medication.  Dad was told to bring me back a few days later for x-rays if the medicine didn’t start to work.  I saw tears in daddy's eyes "he is so soft" Woof Woof!
